Villa Description

Swimming pool and BBQ area

The south-facing swimming pool gets plenty of sun during the day, and has partial views of the sea. The surrounding terrace gives ample space to sunbathe, and is partly covered providing a cool, shady spot to eat. The brick BBQ is at the side of the house, where you can cook up a tasty homemade meal.

Entrance

Villa Laurel occupies the corner plot of a small cul-de-sac. A traditional olive wood gate opens onto a path leading to the villa entrance. From the hall, you can access the garage which has a washing machine and extra storage space. There is space to park on the street outside if you decide to hire a car.

Living space

The lounge is open plan with the dining area, and includes comfortable seating, a flat screen TV and a table and chairs. Large sliding patio doors open directly onto the pool terrace, with views of the sea beyond. The adjoining kitchen has sleek green units and a small breakfast table. The exposed beam ceiling and attractive ornamental corner fireplace add character and a homely, traditional feel.

Bedrooms and bathrooms

On the ground floor is a twin bedroom and a separate shower room. Upstairs are 2 further twin bedrooms, one with an en suite shower, the other with an en suite bathroom. All 3 bedrooms are well-furnished, bright and airy, and have plenty of storage space.

First floor terrace

The terrace, accessed from the first floor hall, has wonderful views of the South Coast and sea, as well as the pool below.

Villa Location

Villa Laurel is located in the area of Son Bou known as San Jaime, 10 minutes' walk from the resort centre. This much-loved resort is full of shops, bars, cafes and restaurants with a varied choice of cuisine and a friendly atmosphere. The beach at Son Bou is the longest on the island, and is accessed via a wooden board walk on the far side of the resort, still within easy reach on foot. For larger parties, our Villa Girasol is next door.

Local markets and shopping

A leisurely 10 minute stroll will bring you into the centre of the Son Bou. The resort has a choice of souvenir, beachwear and food shops. Serious shoppers should head into the capital, Mahon, a short drive away. The town has many chic boutiques to browse, as well as a lively market.

Bars and restaurants

This much-loved resort has something for everyone. There are plenty of bars, cafes and restaurants in the centre - choose from simple local bars to Hawaiian-style cocktail lounges, where the drinks are served by staff on roller skates! Or, decide to dine out in a quality restaurant whilst enjoying breath-taking views out to sea.

Beaches

Son Bou is home to the island's longest beach. There are a handful of good beach bars by the seafront where you can take a break from the heat and enjoy a cool drink and a bite to eat. The beach is backed by an area of protected wetland and the entrance is via a wooden board walk not far from the centre of the resort.

Family fun

You can reach any of Menorca's 3 waterparks by car within 50 minutes. Splash waterpark is on the East Coast in Biniancolla, whilst Aqua Center in Calan Forcat and Aqua Rock in Calan Bosch are on the far West Coast of the island. The popular Lloc de Menorca Zoo also makes a great family day out, only 15 minutes' drive inland.

Places of interest

At the far east end of the beach is the Basilica de Son Bou archaeological site, which has lovely views over the open sea. This area also has a thriving wildlife scene and is home to a large bird population. Or, further afield is Monte Toro, the highest point in Menorca. The journey to the peak is an adventure in itself and, once at the top, you can enjoy browsing the gift shop or a bite to eat in the cafe, which has fantastic scenery over the island!

Golf

Menorca's only golf course is 30 minutes' drive away in Son Parc.

Other activities

On calm days there is a good choice of water sport facilities available on the beach. Alternatively, if you prefer something more laid back, the lido at the San Jaime complex has extensive terraces and lawns surrounding the large pool. Children will love the water slides, and nightly entertainment is posted on the board by the restaurant entrance. Either of the islands 2 main towns, Mahon and Ciutadella, also make for a great day trip.

Activities and things to do

Tennis

There are tennis courts in almost every resort, all of which hire out equipment. Try the facilities at Santo Tomas, Calan Porter, Calan Forcat, Arenal Den Castell, Calan Bosch or S'algar.

Monte Toro

El Toro, at 360 metres above sea level, is the highest peak on Menorca. In the centre of the island it towers above the small town of Es Mercadal. Take the time to drive up the steep 3.2km climb to the summit and see the whole of the island spread out beneath you. There are sea views on all four sides and, on a clear day, the view stretches to the north coast of Mallorca.
The mountain is crowned by a convent which has become an important centre of pilgrimage and the neat vegetable and herb gardens beneath the terraces are still tended to by the community of nuns who live there. Visit the tiny chapel or have lunch in the rustic café and browse around the shop, packed with souvenirs and local produce.

Lloc de Menorca Zoo

Lloc de Menorca Zoo, located on the main road from Mahon to Alaior, is sure to be a hit with the kids! The zoo has a range of creatures from farm animals to more exotic zoo animals and children will also be able to pet some of the farm animals.

The zoo also has a small splash pool, 2 museums, a picnic area, snack bar and a gift shop.

Horse Shows

There are many horse and pony riding centres around the island as well as a choice of spectacular equestrian shows which have now become a regular haunt for many of the islands' visitors.

The most popular horse show on the island is the Somni at the Son Martorellet Horse Farm, on the road from Ferreries to Cala Galdana. The farm is dedicated to the breeding, care and training of the Menorcan breed horse and puts on regular performances and dressage displays. Visitors will also be able to look around the farm and stables, and facilities include a gift shop, a choice of places to eat and a childrens play area.

Or why not venture to Calan Blanes or Sant Luis which both still practise the 200 year old traditional of trotting races? The jockey sits on a cart pulled by a horse and tries to maintain the trot - place your bets on the race!

Golf Son Parc

There is only one golf course on the island, set amongst the pine trees in Son Parc, on the North coast. It has recently been extended from 9 holes to 18 and is open 365 days per year.
There is an 18 bay floodlit driving range with the latest technology - Swingcam.
Junior golfers are welcome if accompanied by an adult and the golf shop stocks equipment for purchase or hire for children of 5 years upwards.
The dress code is lenient - shorts, t-shirts and trainers are acceptable but NOT sleeveless vests, swimwear, flipflops etc.

If golf plays an important part of your holiday then it is wise to book in advance.
