Just a few minutes' drive will take you to the village centre, with a small selection of mini markets and tavernas. You'll also be just 5 minutes' drive from the beautiful port town of Sami, one of the main locations for the filming of Captain Corelli's Mandolin. This picturesque town has a small beach and a delightful harbour with many shops, bars and restaurants to sample.

Location features

Local markets and shopping

The local village of Karavomylos has a couple of mini markets and a bakery for stocking up on those daily essentials. Sami is home to some larger supermarkets as well as bakeries, butchers and ATMS. You'll also find several souvenir and jewellery shops, perfect for picking up some gifts to take home.

Bars and restaurants

There are a couple of tavernas in Karavomylos, with one located right on the sea edge offering amazing views across to the neighbouring island of Ithaca. In Sami you'll find many bars, coffee shops and restaurants lining the harbour, serving traditional Greek cuisine. Why not enjoy a glass of wine and admire the picturesque scenery?

Beaches

Karavomylos has a small stretch of pebble beach running along the coast to Sami. If you're feel active, you can walk the mile of coastline between Karavomylos to Sami, with beautiful views along the way. The stunning bay of Antisamos Beach is located on the opposite side of Sami, around 20 minutes' drive from your villa. There is a bar and a couple of tavernas, as well as sunbeds and parasols to hire plus a selection of watersports.

You can also hire your own boat, a fun way to explore the island's stunning coastline. For younger children, horse riding and donkey trekking can be arranged in Sami.

Places of interest

Karavomylos is home to one of the islands most breathtaking attractions, Melissani Lake. Take a boat tour through the underground lake and admire the stunning caves. You'll also find the Drogarati Caves just 10 minutes' drive from your villa. A huge underground cave with stalactites and stalagmites, this makes for an interesting and beautiful phenomenon.

Activities and things to do
Activity
Captain Correli's Mandolina
Kefalonia was buzzing in the summer of 2000 with film crews and the actors Nicholas Cage Penelope Cruz and John Hurt who were starring in the film Captain Corelli's Mandolin.

Most of the filming took place in Sami, a village 9 km south of Agia Efimia, where a huge and beautiful set was built. The campsite of the Italians was built on the beach of Antisamos bay (see left). North of Agia Efimia village you will find the bay shown above (where part of the filming took place), and it can be reached in ten minutes by boat.

Myrtos beach, which is shown to the left and on top of this page was used in the film as well and is situated approximately 5 minutes by car west of Agia Efimia. Myrtos Bay (left) is where the bomb explosion on the beach took place in the film.

For those of you who don't know it - here is the story line -It is 1941 and Captain Antonio Corelli, a young Italian officer, is posted to the Greek island of Kefalonia as part of the occupying forces. At first he is ostracised by the locals, but as a conscientious but far from fanatical soldier, whose main aim is to have a peaceful war, he proves in time to be civilized, humorous and a consummate musician. When the local Doctor's daughter's letters to her fiancé - and members of the underground - go unanswered, the working of the eternal triangle seems inevitable.

You should bring the book with you and spot the locations

Activity
Boat Hire and Watersports
Hiring a boat is a fantastic way of exploring Kefalonia's coastlines. A licence is not required, nor do you need previous experience as novices will receive introductory instruction in boat handling before being let loose.

Watersports, yacht charter (skippered or bareboat), scuba diving and riding are also available.

Activity
Myrtos Beach
Myrtos beach is the trademark of Kefalonia Island and is considered as one of the most beautiful beaches of the entire Ionian Islands. Located north of Argostoli (the island's capital), this impressive beach has a fine golden sand and wonderful turquoise waters (as if someone has thrown bleach in the blue sea), the whole place is surrounded by impressive and majestic vertical rocky cliffs. This pure paradise is one of the most photographed places in Greece and attracts thousands of visitors every summer. A snack-bar, sun beds and umbrellas rentals are available on the beach.
Activity
Melissani and Drogarati Caves
Located in the area of Karavomilos near Sami, lies the Melissani cave which is undoubtedly among Kefalonia's most breathtaking attractions. Discovered in 1951 by speleologist Yiannis Petrohilos, Melissani cave also includes a beautiful lake with crystal blue waters which is 22 metres below ground level and its maximum depth is about 30 metres.

The complete tour is done by boat, first making a round trip around the first hall with the hole in the roof. Then the boat passes the island on the opposite wall, where a small channel exists. This channel is too narrow to row, but there is a rope at the wall and the gondolier pulls the boat through. The second hall is a huge cavern with an arched roof, which was also formed by a collapse, but this cave is more to the centre of the island and because of the slope of the hill, the overlying rock is still thick enough. The second chamber has numerous big stalactites and stalagmites.

Drogarati's Cave, which is also close to Sami is 60m deep and was discovered 300 years ago, when a part of it was destroyed because of a strong earthquake, and so the entrance was created. Initially the cave was developed and used by the community of Haliotata, under the supervision of the speleologist Mrs. Petrocheilos and since 1963 it has been open to the public.
