Villa Location
Villa Melissani is a detached property just up the coast from Sami in an area known as Karavomylos. Surrounded by greenery, enjoy picturesque views across the countryside, all the way to the sea and Sami harbour. Karavomylos is a small seaside resort and home to Melissani lake, one of the island’s most visited natural attractions. Just a few minutes’ drive will take you to the village centre with a small selection of mini markets and tavernas. The beautiful port town of Sami is also just a short drive away. One of the locations for the filming of Captain Corelli's Mandolin, this idyllic setting has a small beach and a delightful harbour to enjoy.

Location features

Local markets and shopping

You can stock up for essentials in the nearby village of Karavomylos that has a couple of mini markets and a bakery. In Sami, 5 minutes’ drive away, you’ll find larger supermarkets as well as bakeries, butchers and shops, perfect for picking up souvenirs.

Bars and restaurants

Karavomylos has a few laid back tavernas with a particular highlight being a restaurant perched on the sea edge. Offering incredible views, it’s a great setting to sit and admire the sunset and see all the way to neighbouring island of Ithaca. Meanwhile, Sami has plenty of bars, coffee shops, restaurants and tavernas. They are mostly along the harbour front and serve up Greek favourites and fresh seafood.

Beaches

Karavomylos has a long, pebbly stretch of beach running all the way to Sami. If you’re feeling energetic, it’s possible to walk the mile of coastline. On the other side of Sami is the beautiful horseshoe bay of Antisamos. There are plenty of facilities here, including a bar and a couple of tavernas, plus sunbeds and parasols to hire. It’s also a popular spot for watersports. You could also take a trip to Myrtos beach, 25 minutes’ drive away. One of the most photographed beaches in Europe, it’s famous for its bright, white pebbles and turquoise waters.

Family fun

There are plenty of water sports available in the area as well as boat hire, scuba diving and organised boat trips. Why not take a trip to the neighbouring Island of Ithaca? In Karavomylos, there’s a small lake by the sea with an abundance of wildlife including ducks, swans and herons – a great option for a family day out. Horse riding and donkey trekking can also be found near Sami.

Places of interest

Karavomylos is a fascinating area and home to one of the island’s natural phenomena and most visited attractions, Melissani Lake. You can take a boat tour through this atmospheric underground lake – don’t forget your camera! Just outside Sami is another attraction, Drogarati caves, a huge network of stalactites and stalagmites waiting to be explored.

The east coast of Kefalonia also offers many opportunities to experience amazing views. One such example is the ancient Acropolis of Sami, perched high on a mountain. See the original walls that are still in place as you wander through these ancient ruins.

Activities and things to do
Activity
Boat Hire and Watersports
Hiring a boat is a fantastic way of exploring Kefalonia's coastlines. A licence is not required, nor do you need previous experience as novices will receive introductory instruction in boat handling before being let loose.

Watersports, yacht charter (skippered or bareboat), scuba diving and riding are also available.

Activity
Captain Correli's Mandolina
Kefalonia was buzzing in the summer of 2000 with film crews and the actors Nicholas Cage Penelope Cruz and John Hurt who were starring in the film Captain Corelli's Mandolin.

Most of the filming took place in Sami, a village 9 km south of Agia Efimia, where a huge and beautiful set was built. The campsite of the Italians was built on the beach of Antisamos bay (see left). North of Agia Efimia village you will find the bay shown above (where part of the filming took place), and it can be reached in ten minutes by boat.

Myrtos beach, which is shown to the left and on top of this page was used in the film as well and is situated approximately 5 minutes by car west of Agia Efimia. Myrtos Bay (left) is where the bomb explosion on the beach took place in the film.

For those of you who don't know it - here is the story line -It is 1941 and Captain Antonio Corelli, a young Italian officer, is posted to the Greek island of Kefalonia as part of the occupying forces. At first he is ostracised by the locals, but as a conscientious but far from fanatical soldier, whose main aim is to have a peaceful war, he proves in time to be civilized, humorous and a consummate musician. When the local Doctor's daughter's letters to her fiancé - and members of the underground - go unanswered, the working of the eternal triangle seems inevitable.

You should bring the book with you and spot the locations

Activity
Melissani and Drogarati Caves
Located in the area of Karavomilos near Sami, lies the Melissani cave which is undoubtedly among Kefalonia's most breathtaking attractions. Discovered in 1951 by speleologist Yiannis Petrohilos, Melissani cave also includes a beautiful lake with crystal blue waters which is 22 metres below ground level and its maximum depth is about 30 metres.

The complete tour is done by boat, first making a round trip around the first hall with the hole in the roof. Then the boat passes the island on the opposite wall, where a small channel exists. This channel is too narrow to row, but there is a rope at the wall and the gondolier pulls the boat through. The second hall is a huge cavern with an arched roof, which was also formed by a collapse, but this cave is more to the centre of the island and because of the slope of the hill, the overlying rock is still thick enough. The second chamber has numerous big stalactites and stalagmites.

Drogarati's Cave, which is also close to Sami is 60m deep and was discovered 300 years ago, when a part of it was destroyed because of a strong earthquake, and so the entrance was created. Initially the cave was developed and used by the community of Haliotata, under the supervision of the speleologist Mrs. Petrocheilos and since 1963 it has been open to the public.

Activity
Myrtos Beach
Myrtos beach is the trademark of Kefalonia Island and is considered as one of the most beautiful beaches of the entire Ionian Islands. Located north of Argostoli (the island's capital), this impressive beach has a fine golden sand and wonderful turquoise waters (as if someone has thrown bleach in the blue sea), the whole place is surrounded by impressive and majestic vertical rocky cliffs. This pure paradise is one of the most photographed places in Greece and attracts thousands of visitors every summer. A snack-bar, sun beds and umbrellas rentals are available on the beach.
