Location features

Local markets and shopping

You'll find a couple of mini markets and a bakery in the local village of Karavomylos, ideal for your holiday essentials. Sami is well equipped with a few larger supermarkets as well as bakeries, butchers and ATMS. You'll also find several gift and jewellery shops, perfect for browsing for some souvenirs.

Bars and restaurants

Karavomylos is home to a couple of tavernas, one of which is located right on the seafront with stunning views to the neighbouring island of Ithaca. For a greater choice head to Sami, where you'll find a good selection of tavernas, cafes and bars. Many of the restaurants line the harbour front, offering traditional Greek cuisine and fresh seafood with a view.

There is a small stretch of pebble beach running along the coast from Karavomylos to Sami. If you are feeling active you can walk the mile of coastline, with beautiful views along the way. The stunning bay of Antisamos Beach is located on the opposite side of Sami, around 20 minutes' drive from your villa. There are sunbeds and parasols to hire as well as a couple of beach tavernas and a selection of watersports on offer.

Family fun

There are lots of watersports in the area as well as organised boat trips - a great way to discover the stunning coastline. Daily ferries run from Sami to the neighbouring island of Ithaca or you can even hire your own boat and become a skipper for the day! Karavomylos, named after a water mill next to the sea, is home to a small lake which attracts plenty of wild life including ducks, swans and herons - a fun option for a family picnic.

Places of interest

Karavomylos is home to twos of the island's most interesting attractions, Melissani Lake and Drogarati Caves. Take a boat tour through the underground lake or explore the huge underground cave with fascinating stalactites and stalagmites. There are also several archaeological sites to explore in this area, including the Acropolis of Sami. Reached by a series of scenic walking trails, you can explore the ancient ruins of this once powerful town.

Activities and things to do
Boat Hire and Watersports
Hiring a boat is a fantastic way of exploring Kefalonia's coastlines. A licence is not required, nor do you need previous experience as novices will receive introductory instruction in boat handling before being let loose.

Watersports, yacht charter (skippered or bareboat), scuba diving and riding are also available.

Melissani and Drogarati Caves
Located in the area of Karavomilos near Sami, lies the Melissani cave which is undoubtedly among Kefalonia's most breathtaking attractions. Discovered in 1951 by speleologist Yiannis Petrohilos, Melissani cave also includes a beautiful lake with crystal blue waters which is 22 metres below ground level and its maximum depth is about 30 metres.

The complete tour is done by boat, first making a round trip around the first hall with the hole in the roof. Then the boat passes the island on the opposite wall, where a small channel exists. This channel is too narrow to row, but there is a rope at the wall and the gondolier pulls the boat through. The second hall is a huge cavern with an arched roof, which was also formed by a collapse, but this cave is more to the centre of the island and because of the slope of the hill, the overlying rock is still thick enough. The second chamber has numerous big stalactites and stalagmites.

Drogarati's Cave, which is also close to Sami is 60m deep and was discovered 300 years ago, when a part of it was destroyed because of a strong earthquake, and so the entrance was created. Initially the cave was developed and used by the community of Haliotata, under the supervision of the speleologist Mrs. Petrocheilos and since 1963 it has been open to the public.

Mount Ainos National Park
In 1962 Mount Ainos was declared a National Park by the Greek state. The forested area of the range now covers an area of 2826 hectares. The larger part of Mount Ainos is given over exclusively to the unique Kefalonia pine (Abies cephalonica), with its straight trunk, its rich pyramid-shaped foliage and its characteristic pine needles. The species retains its purity on Kefalonia since it is protected by the isolation of the island. The highest mountain on Kefalonia, Ainos, extends like a spinal cord through the southern part of island. It has a total length of 10 km and its highest peak is Mount Soros, at 1628m. Mount Roudi is an extension of this range to the north-west, the highest peak being Yioutari, which rises to 1125m.
Horse Riding
The nearest riding schools are located near Sami and Lixouri where you can learn to ride, improve your skills or simply enjoy yourself. There are mountain trails and beach riding to swimming with the horses.

Captain Correli's Mandolina
Kefalonia was buzzing in the summer of 2000 with film crews and the actors Nicholas Cage Penelope Cruz and John Hurt who were starring in the film Captain Corelli's Mandolin.

Most of the filming took place in Sami, a village 9 km south of Agia Efimia, where a huge and beautiful set was built. The campsite of the Italians was built on the beach of Antisamos bay (see left). North of Agia Efimia village you will find the bay shown above (where part of the filming took place), and it can be reached in ten minutes by boat.

Myrtos beach, which is shown to the left and on top of this page was used in the film as well and is situated approximately 5 minutes by car west of Agia Efimia. Myrtos Bay (left) is where the bomb explosion on the beach took place in the film.

For those of you who don't know it - here is the story line -It is 1941 and Captain Antonio Corelli, a young Italian officer, is posted to the Greek island of Kefalonia as part of the occupying forces. At first he is ostracised by the locals, but as a conscientious but far from fanatical soldier, whose main aim is to have a peaceful war, he proves in time to be civilized, humorous and a consummate musician. When the local Doctor's daughter's letters to her fiancé - and members of the underground - go unanswered, the working of the eternal triangle seems inevitable.
