Villa Location
Villa Alkiona is a stylish 4 bedroom, 5 bathroom villa in an elevated position on the south facing slopes of the old village of Skala, south Kefalonia. The villa looks down across Skala bay towards the sea, the neighbouring island of Zante and the mainland. The centre of Skala, with its long expanse of sand and shingle beach, and a selection of shops and tavernas, is within a short drive.

Location features

Bars and restaurants

Skala is a thriving coastal resort which still retains much of its Greek charm. The village itself is designed in a grid pattern and it's therefore very easy to find your way around. Facilities include several mini markets, a bakery, butcher, chemist, ATM and of course a large selection of bars and tavernas.

Local markets and shopping

The nearby resort of Skala has a small selection of mini markets, a couple of bakeries and assorted gift shops. Most are located on the main street running from the top of the village down to the beach road.

Villa Alkiona is located above the old village of Skala, securing fantastic views over the southern coast of the island towards the sea. The nearest beach is around 15 minutes away by car, but the bays of Mounda and Kaminia are also within an easy drive. Skala is famous for its long sand and shingle beach with its back drop of pine trees. A large variety of water sport facilities can be found on the beach and there are also glass bottom boat trips available. The main road into Skala runs parallel to the beach and continues onto the next town of Poros, which is also one of the islands main ports and has ferries running daily to the mainland.

Family fun

Leisure activities on the island are mainly focused around the beach or sea. A large selection of water sports facilities, including jet skis, kayaking and donuts, can be found at Skala Beach. Boat hire is also available and there are daily cruises to Ithaca and Zante. Horse and donkey riding facilities can also be found within a 40 minute drive.

Places of interest

At the edge of Skala Village, there are the remains of a Roman Villa which was constructed in the 3rd century AD. The floor has well preserved mosaics, depicting Gods and animals.

Activities and things to do
Glass Bottom Boat
Based in the Southern resort of Skala, "Nautilus" is a specially constructed boat of high standards. Due to these high standards there is little movement in the boat, which is absolutely necessary because of the glass bottom. The possibility to watch the seabed, to view the rocky coast or to cruise the Ionian Sea waters at a speed of up to 30 knots, feeling the breeze and the sea very close will ensure a pleasant cruise.
Loggerhead Turtle Sanctuary
There is a protected nesting site at Kefalonia called Kaminia beach. The sea Turtle Protection Society work hard and long to protect the fascinating creatures when they come in to nest on the beach. The females heave and tug themselves across the beach to find a nesting site digging holes and laying small round eggs. An average nest would have 120 eggs and once they are safely covered with warm sand the female returns to the water. Some females will lay as many as four times during the nesting season and the eggs take about two months to hatch. The baby turtles dig their way out at night and head instinctively for the sea. This natural pattern can be disrupted by noise and lights. Sometimes the body clock in the baby turtles goes away and they pop out during the day. If you see a turtle its best not to touch it as its essential to their survival that they make their own way to the sea. The Marine Turtle Project was set up some years ago to observe and record the nesting female turtles on the beaches near to the villages of Skala and Ratzakli on the south-eastern tip of the island. This project has continued to this day and incorporated a conservation programme to promote the protection of the beaches where these creatures lay their eggs. Just outside Katelios you will find a little old schoolhouse which has been transformed and is now the base for The Katelios Group for the Research and Protection of Marine and Terrestrial Life. The group was founded in 1994 and consists mainly of local people with an interest in the long term future of Kefalonia
Boat Hire and Watersports
Hiring a boat is a fantastic way of exploring Kefalonia's coastlines. A licence is not required, nor do you need previous experience as novices will receive introductory instruction in boat handling before being let loose.

Watersports, yacht charter (skippered or bareboat), scuba diving and riding are also available.

Horse Riding
The nearest riding schools are located near Sami and Lixouri where you can learn to ride, improve your skills or simply enjoy yourself. There are mountain trails and beach riding to swimming with the horses.
