Villa Location
Set on a hillside, on a residential road high above the coastline, Villa Andrea is just 10 minutes' downhill walk from the restaurants, bars and beach in the sought after resort of Lourdas. Lourdas is a laid-back resort, a great choice for a relaxing holiday as well as a good base from which to explore the southern part of the island, including the capital of Argostoli. Our Villa Leanda is just next door - perfect for larger groups wanting separate accommodation.

Location features

Local markets and shopping

Within a short walk is a bakery and a well-stocked mini market with beach supplies and a cash machine. The beachfront also has a couple of small local shops. There are no markets as such on the island but the nearby capital town of Argostoli has a large array of open fruit and vegetable stalls.

Bars and restaurants

You'll be spoilt for choice when it comes to places to eat. Lourdas has over 20 tavernas, most of which are along the beach front serving traditional Greek cuisine.

The resort of Lourdas is mainly centred around its long sand and pebble beach, where sunbeds and umbrellas can be hired, as well as small boats and jet skis in the summer months. The small beach of Kanali, and shallow sandy bay with beachside taverna at Trapezaki, are both within 5 minutes' drive if you fancy a change of scenery.

Family fun

You can arrange kayak hire nearby, or why not venture along the coast to Skala which has a larger selection of water sports on offer? Boat hire is readily available in the area, or, if you're feeling adventurous, you can catch one of the daily cruises to the neighbouring islands of Ithaca or Zante!

Places of interest

Mazarakata Tombs and the monasteries of Sission and St. Andreas, to name a few. Half an hours' drive inland will take you to the Gerasimos Monastery (named after the island's patron saint) and the Robola Winery are both worth seeing. Argostoli, 30 minutes' drive east, is a pleasant harbour with plenty of shops, bars and restaurants.

Other activities

Melissani Lake and Caves, and Myrtos Bay are 2 of the most popular attractions on the island, both within an hour's drive. There are also some great walking routes around the immediate area, both hilly and flat, which are a great way to see more of the island's stunning scenery.

Activities and things to do
Boat Hire and Watersports
Hiring a boat is a fantastic way of exploring Kefalonia's coastlines. A licence is not required, nor do you need previous experience as novices will receive introductory instruction in boat handling before being let loose.

Watersports, yacht charter (skippered or bareboat), scuba diving and riding are also available.

Loggerhead Turtle Sanctuary
There is a protected nesting site at Kefalonia called Kaminia beach. The sea Turtle Protection Society work hard and long to protect the fascinating creatures when they come in to nest on the beach. The females heave and tug themselves across the beach to find a nesting site digging holes and laying small round eggs. An average nest would have 120 eggs and once they are safely covered with warm sand the female returns to the water. Some females will lay as many as four times during the nesting season and the eggs take about two months to hatch. The baby turtles dig their way out at night and head instinctively for the sea. This natural pattern can be disrupted by noise and lights. Sometimes the body clock in the baby turtles goes away and they pop out during the day. If you see a turtle its best not to touch it as its essential to their survival that they make their own way to the sea. The Marine Turtle Project was set up some years ago to observe and record the nesting female turtles on the beaches near to the villages of Skala and Ratzakli on the south-eastern tip of the island. This project has continued to this day and incorporated a conservation programme to promote the protection of the beaches where these creatures lay their eggs. Just outside Katelios you will find a little old schoolhouse which has been transformed and is now the base for The Katelios Group for the Research and Protection of Marine and Terrestrial Life. The group was founded in 1994 and consists mainly of local people with an interest in the long term future of Kefalonia
Glass Bottom Boat
Based in the Southern resort of Skala, "Nautilus" is a specially constructed boat of high standards. Due to these high standards there is little movement in the boat, which is absolutely necessary because of the glass bottom. The possibility to watch the seabed, to view the rocky coast or to cruise the Ionian Sea waters at a speed of up to 30 knots, feeling the breeze and the sea very close will ensure a pleasant cruise.
Melissani and Drogarati Caves
Located in the area of Karavomilos near Sami, lies the Melissani cave which is undoubtedly among Kefalonia's most breathtaking attractions. Discovered in 1951 by speleologist Yiannis Petrohilos, Melissani cave also includes a beautiful lake with crystal blue waters which is 22 metres below ground level and its maximum depth is about 30 metres.

The complete tour is done by boat, first making a round trip around the first hall with the hole in the roof. Then the boat passes the island on the opposite wall, where a small channel exists. This channel is too narrow to row, but there is a rope at the wall and the gondolier pulls the boat through. The second hall is a huge cavern with an arched roof, which was also formed by a collapse, but this cave is more to the centre of the island and because of the slope of the hill, the overlying rock is still thick enough. The second chamber has numerous big stalactites and stalagmites.

Drogarati's Cave, which is also close to Sami is 60m deep and was discovered 300 years ago, when a part of it was destroyed because of a strong earthquake, and so the entrance was created. Initially the cave was developed and used by the community of Haliotata, under the supervision of the speleologist Mrs. Petrocheilos and since 1963 it has been open to the public.

Agios Gerasimos Monastery
Agios Gerasimos is the patron saint of the island. On its feast day, the monastery is swarming with pilgrims. According to tradition, he was born in Trikala of Korinthia and was a member of the famous Notaras family. He became a monk and spent twelve years in the Holy Land and five years in Zakynthos. He came to Kefalonia in 1560 and stayed in the cave of the same name, south of Argostoli.

Later, he founded the monastery and took residence there until his death on 15 August, 1579. Two years later, on 20 October, 1581, his relics were placed inside the monastery. He was canonized in 1622. At the courtyard, there is a big plane tree and a well, which is said to have been dug by the saint himself. Inside, there is a trap-door where he is said to have spent the greater part of his life. On the 15th of August and the 20th of October, big festivals and processions take place. Many miracles are connected to the saint's relics and icon.

From the minute we booked the holiday to the minute we stepped off the plane back in England the whole experience was fantastic. We have been on many holidays in many countries, but we both agree this was up there as one of the top holidays we have had,we normally only book a weeks holiday at a time and have done for many years but we`d wished we had booked this one for 2 weeks. Please give yourselves a big pat on your backs, Well Done !!!
