Villa Location
Set on the hillside above the quiet resort of Katelios, the elevated position of this private villa provides panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, and down to the Aegean sea. The resort of Katelios is famous for its fresh fish tavernas and its picturesque beach. Set in a small complex of 5 villas, each villa is set discreetly apart and separated by large trees and shrubs for maximum privacy. Our villa Orchidea is next door.

Location features

Local markets and shopping

Originally a fishing village Katelios is slowly developing and has a small selection of tavernas and mini-markets. The larger, more developed resort of Skala, with several large mini-markets and ATM facilities, is around 10 minutes' away by car.

Katelios is home to a Blue Flag sand and shingle beach, with plenty of sun loungers and parasols for hire. Alternatively head 10 minutes' down the coast to Skala Beach, with many water sports available.

Family fun

Motor boat hire is available from the small marina at Katelios, why not take a picnic and spend the day exploring the coast?

Places of interest

Katelios is a good base for exploring the island. Argostoli, the capital of Kefalonia, is 20 miles to the west of Katelios. Or, closer to home, Mounda Bay is around 10 minutes' drive away, home to the turtle nesting ground which is protected by the environmental centre based in Katelios. If you'd prefer to see the island from a different vantage point, why not hire a boat to explore the coast?

Other activities

The lush green hills behind Katelios's beaches provide a beautiful backdrop and many interesting paths for walkers. If you stroll along the river, shaded by plane trees, you'll see wild flowers and have a good chance of spotting some rare birds.

Activities and things to do
Loggerhead Turtle Sanctuary
There is a protected nesting site at Kefalonia called Kaminia beach. The sea Turtle Protection Society work hard and long to protect the fascinating creatures when they come in to nest on the beach. The females heave and tug themselves across the beach to find a nesting site digging holes and laying small round eggs. An average nest would have 120 eggs and once they are safely covered with warm sand the female returns to the water. Some females will lay as many as four times during the nesting season and the eggs take about two months to hatch. The baby turtles dig their way out at night and head instinctively for the sea. This natural pattern can be disrupted by noise and lights. Sometimes the body clock in the baby turtles goes away and they pop out during the day. If you see a turtle its best not to touch it as its essential to their survival that they make their own way to the sea. The Marine Turtle Project was set up some years ago to observe and record the nesting female turtles on the beaches near to the villages of Skala and Ratzakli on the south-eastern tip of the island. This project has continued to this day and incorporated a conservation programme to promote the protection of the beaches where these creatures lay their eggs. Just outside Katelios you will find a little old schoolhouse which has been transformed and is now the base for The Katelios Group for the Research and Protection of Marine and Terrestrial Life. The group was founded in 1994 and consists mainly of local people with an interest in the long term future of Kefalonia
Boat Hire and Watersports
Hiring a boat is a fantastic way of exploring Kefalonia's coastlines. A licence is not required, nor do you need previous experience as novices will receive introductory instruction in boat handling before being let loose.

Watersports, yacht charter (skippered or bareboat), scuba diving and riding are also available.

Glass Bottom Boat
Based in the Southern resort of Skala, "Nautilus" is a specially constructed boat of high standards. Due to these high standards there is little movement in the boat, which is absolutely necessary because of the glass bottom. The possibility to watch the seabed, to view the rocky coast or to cruise the Ionian Sea waters at a speed of up to 30 knots, feeling the breeze and the sea very close will ensure a pleasant cruise.
Horse Riding
The nearest riding schools are located near Sami and Lixouri where you can learn to ride, improve your skills or simply enjoy yourself. There are mountain trails and beach riding to swimming with the horses.

Melissani and Drogarati Caves
Located in the area of Karavomilos near Sami, lies the Melissani cave which is undoubtedly among Kefalonia's most breathtaking attractions. Discovered in 1951 by speleologist Yiannis Petrohilos, Melissani cave also includes a beautiful lake with crystal blue waters which is 22 metres below ground level and its maximum depth is about 30 metres.

The complete tour is done by boat, first making a round trip around the first hall with the hole in the roof. Then the boat passes the island on the opposite wall, where a small channel exists. This channel is too narrow to row, but there is a rope at the wall and the gondolier pulls the boat through. The second hall is a huge cavern with an arched roof, which was also formed by a collapse, but this cave is more to the centre of the island and because of the slope of the hill, the overlying rock is still thick enough. The second chamber has numerous big stalactites and stalagmites.

Drogarati's Cave, which is also close to Sami is 60m deep and was discovered 300 years ago, when a part of it was destroyed because of a strong earthquake, and so the entrance was created. Initially the cave was developed and used by the community of Haliotata, under the supervision of the speleologist Mrs. Petrocheilos and since 1963 it has been open to the public.

Villa Thymari Customer Reviews

Stuart Mcgowan, 13-May-2014

The villa was very comfortable and the maid visited 3 times during our one week stay to change the bedding and clean. It was in a beautiful setting and had superb views. The pool was clean and warm and the kids loved it - they would have stayed in there all day if we let them. The villa was close enough to the resort to be a comfortable walking distance, but far enough away to allow us perfect peace and quiet. All in all, I give it a 10 out of 10.
