Villa Location
The village of Asteri is a typical Cretan village where the locals are out and about, ideal if you're after this kind of atmosphere. There is a mini market and taverna within walking distance from Villa Artemis and the beach of Sfakaki is just a little over 5 minutes in a car. The busy market town of Rethymnon and the popular resorts of Platanias and Adelianos Kampos are all within driving distance.

Location features

Local markets and shopping

There is a mini market for your daily essentials within walking distance. The popular town of Rethymnon has a market in the centre every Thursday. This is a great place for fruit and vegetables, local cheeses and a variety of olives. Alternatively, you can go to the old town of Rethymnon which is is a labyrinth of small streets where all types of shops can be found, from traditional boot makers to fragrant coffee emporia where the beans are ground whilst you wait. Jewellers windows are eye candy for gem lovers and fashionistas will love the small eclectic boutiques. However, go to one of the large supermarkets and you will find everything you need and some different products too which are local to the area.

Bars and restaurants

The village of Asteri has a couple of very well-known tavernas which serve local dishes and are a short walk from the villa. Alternatively, Rethymnon has some very elegant, sophisticated restaurants with impressive wine lists and make for a very special experience. If in Platanias there is a great selection of restaurants and cafes to suit all tastes.

The closest beach to Villa Artemis is golden sand Sfakaki, a little over 5 minutes' drive away. There's also the beach of Rethymnon which is very popular and a good choice for some fun in the sun around 20 minutes' drive away. If it's a busy organised beach you're looking for, head to Platanias to Baja Beach Club with their gazebos, day beds and waiter service from their cosmopolitan restaurant.

Family fun

When the heat is on, where better to go than the water park? Limnoupolis in Chania will fit the bill perfectly and it's very easy to get to. If you are looking for a spot of competition, then why not take to the go-kart track or crazy golf course in Platanias and Adele Kambos? Bicycle hire is also very popular and a great way to explore the local villages.

Places of interest

Visit the ancient city of Eleftherna which has a new museum with exhibits excavated from the site. The monastery of Arkadi is also nearby and easily accessible. For a full day out, set off east and drive to Elounda where you can take a boat across to Spinalonga Island which is featured in Victoria Hislop's novel 'The Island'.

The 18-hole golf course is just outside Hersonissos in the east of the island and has competition standard greens.

Other places of interest, activities

The Samaria Gorge is famous for its 10 mile trail and attracts many visitors every year. Rare birds of prey, the indigenous Kri Kri goats and extraordinary flora and fauna are just some of the reasons this is a protected nature reserve. It's also not for the faint hearted! Preparation and sturdy footwear are key to making it an unforgettable experience in a good way!

Every villa comes with its own manual, complete with details of the best restaurants, taxis, local amenities and activities. And of course, our reps are on hand to make sure you love your holiday more. If you need any advice or tips on the local area, they will be more than happy to help.

Activities and things to do
Waterpark - Limnoupolis
This great water park is set in a fabulous countryside setting away from the busy resorts of Chania. It’s 8 kilometres from the town of Chania and has a variety of rides from Kamikazi to the Lazy River.
A trip to Spinalonga should not be missed. This is a very small island near to Elounda which was a Leper colony until the 1950s. It has more recently been brought to our attention as the setting for Victoria Hislops 'The Island'. Take a ferry from either Aghios Nikolaos, Elounda or Plaka and visit the island and the village. Restoration projects have been gong on for some time and shops and houses can be seen in some semblance of their original state.

Go Kart Tracks
There are several go kart tracks suitable for children in the resorts of Chania and Rethymnon. They are smaller tracks and smaller karts geared especially for budding Formula 1 drivers!
