Villa Location
Villa Athanasia is a detached property with a privileged position on the rugged coastline of Almyros Beach. There is a traditional taverna just 50 yards from your villa, perfect if you don't want to drive every evening. The bustling resort of Acharavi is a 10 minute drive away, with a good choice of restaurants, bars and shops. You'll also be ideally located to explore the rest of the island, with the lively resort of Sidari and the traditional town of Kassiopi both within a 20 minute drive.

Location features

Local markets and shopping

Acharavi has a good selection of souvenir and gift shops and is great for picking up local handicraft such as jewellery, soaps and trinkets made from olive wood. You'll also find a couple of supermarkets for stocking up your villa. If you're after fresh produce, Corfu Town is home to a farmer's market and is around an hours' drive away.

Bars and restaurants

There is a traditional taverna serving local Greek cuisine just a few steps from your villa. Or, head to Acharavi where you'll find a mix of simple beachfront tavernas as well as plenty of international options in the town. Nearby Kassiopi is also worth a visit with some restaurants and bars lining the pretty harbour front. If you're after a livelier affair, then the bustling resort of Sidari has a wide selection of international restaurants as well as an energetic nightlife.

Beaches

Villa Athanasia has direct access on to Almyros Beach, a long, sweeping shingle beach that is ideal for picnics and sunset walks. The beautiful sandy beach of St. Spyridon is a 10 minute drive away, with shallow waters and soft sand. Backed by a lagoon and nature reserve, this is also a popular spot for walkers.

Family fun

One of the best ways to discover Corfu's stunning coastline and secluded bays is from the water. Boats can be hired from Kassiopi, so why not pack a picnic and be a skipper for the day? There is also horse riding available in nearby Avlaki and Roda, a great way to explore the countryside.

Places of interest

Take a scenic drive up to the Pantrocrator Mountain, the highest point in Corfu. At the top is a monastery and café, both offering spectacular views. Or why not visit the abandoned village of Old Perithia, with beautiful architecture and lovely scenery? The islands capital, Corfu Town, is also worth a visit with Venetian fortresses, narrow streets and a picturesque port. The shopping and dining possibilities are endless here, with lots of boutiques, restaurants and bars open until late at night.

Golf

The islands only golf course is located in Ermones, around an hours' drive away.

Other activities

The Corfu Trail passes just behind Acharavi and is very popular with hikers. The route is well sign-posted and easy to follow, and you'll be rewarded with some spectacular scenery.

Activity
Corfu Golf Club
Designed by the famous architect Donald Harradine the Corfu course has been praised by many as one of the best kept in Europe and he has blended the natural resources of the lovely Ropa Valley with man made hazards to make the course a good but fair test. It is as enjoyable for the scratch player as it is for the long handicap one. The course is open 7 days a week.

The magnificent greens of Penncross Bent are considered to be the finest in the Mediterranean, the treelined fairways and the sandtraps combined with several lakes and meandering streams, make an attractive picture against a backcloth of high hills. A new modern irrigation system keeps the golf course in excellent condition even through the hot summer months. Over the past 3 years the golf course and clubhouse has undergone a total renovation. Bunkers have been redesigned, deepened, drained and filled with white sand, shipped in from a nearby Greek island.

Suitable for all levels of player with qualified instructors on hand for beginners and equipment rental available. It is also ideally placed for families who perhaps don't all share the same interest in the sport being a mere 10 minute drive from Aqualand, the largest waterpark on the island, 20 minutes out of Corfu town and 10 minutes from the nearest beach at Ermones.

It has a large well-appointed clubhouse and restaurant and is open all year round.

Activity
Corfu Town
The capital of the island and at one time of all the Ionian Islands, Corfu is a joy to discover. With its elegant arcades, narrow Venetian style streets and relaxed friendly atmosphere it is definitely a must for all. A historically strategic and heavily fortified town and port Corfu's history dates back centuries. Evidence of the original site of the ancient Greek city can be seen in the gardens of Mon Repos, the one time residence of the Greek royal family and in the Archaeological museum. Further evidence of Corfu's Historic past can be found simply wandering through the streets. You will come across little Byzantine churches, Italian platias, French arcades and a very British cricket pitch. A walk up either of the two dominating Venetian fortresses that still remain is well worth the effort for the panoramic views across the town, port and sea and for refreshment and shopping you are truly spoilt for choice with a wide range of shaded café bars, restaurants and shops open from early morning until late at night.
Activity
Pantocrator Mountain
The highest point of Corfu and standing majestically overlooking the North East corner of Corfu, Corfu Town and the mainland beyond.

One of the many beautiful driving routes on the island takes you up through several small villages including Spartillas, known (along with its sister village Lakones on the opposite coast) as 'the balcony of Corfu' because of its spectacular views.

Follow on through Strinillas, one of the original hidden villages, built out of sight of the coast and therefore the marauding pirates of the time and up a narrow road to Mount Pantocrator the highest point on the island at 906 metres.

There is also an adventurous drive from the North of the island, but this is best done in a four wheel drive vehicle.

The last section of the road is better walked by the nervous but the fantastic panoramic views from the monastry and café, at the top are well worth the effort.

Activity
Boat Trips
Easily one of the best, most enchanting and relaxed ways to see Corfu is from the sea. Whether you are happy just to remain local with a pedalo, be adventurous by hiring your own little boat, prefer your boat to be captained and be wined and dined or fancy going for the ferries and heading off to other islands, there is something for everyone. There are various boat trips and excursions on offer all over the island. The main areas to take to the sea are the North East Coast with its stunningly beautiful scenery and myriad of little pebble bays or Paleokastritsa with its dramatic cliffs and deep blue waters. 'Vivi' boat is a well-maintained traditional caique that does boat trips up the North East Coast of Corfu and to Corfu town. Taking no more than 14 passengers it is a lovely day out for the whole family. With or without a meal included it is a relaxed way to see the beautiful coast and some of the beaches only accessible by boat. Leaving at 11am and returning by about 4pm the trips are lovely and personal and the captain is particularly good with children. There are snorkels and masks aboard that the captain shows older children how to use. Paleocastritsa has little boats that take up to 20 people on small tours to the nearby caves. The tours last about an hour and are a lovely way to admire the dramatic scenery and small caves of the West Coast. Calypso glass bottom boat. Leaving from Corfu old port on a regular basis a large glass bottom boat takes big groups to a spot just off the island of Vidos. The round trip takes about an hour and children can see two sea lions and the fish around the island.
Activity
Walking
Although technically not a sport, walking is a great way to excercise and reduce the effect of those long lunches.

Corfu is a beautiful island for walkers particularly in early and late season when the temperatures are slightly milder and the wild flowers are out in abundance.

There are various footpath books for those that want to be independent and even just to stop the car and walk down the olive tracks near the sea or up in the hills is a pleasure.

Organised walking trips are available but tend to be less frequent in the summer months as the heat can prohibit lengthy walks midday. Always remember to take plenty of water with you when walking.
